Dental Implants Chapel Hill, NC

COMPLETE TREATMENT FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS IN CHAPEL HILL, NC

Dental implants are the “gold standard” for the treatment of missing teeth. They are a tooth replacement option that is as close to your natural teeth as possible. A dental implant is permanent, natural-looking, and can stabilize your overall oral health. By replacing both tooth and tooth root, the implanted post functions like a tooth root to minimize bone loss in the jaw. Dr. Furgurson and Dr. White recommend the use of dental implants whenever appropriate. Patients who need to replace a lost tooth or secure a bridge or denture benefit the most from dental implants. Tooth implants are one of the dental services we provide patients in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Your dentist will work with you to evaluate your dental health and discuss your concerns and goals. He will give relevant treatment advice for tooth replacement.

Dr. James Furgurson has advanced training in implant dentistry having completed advanced continuums with the Triangle Dental Institute and world renowned Misch Resnik Institute. What Are Dental Implants?

ABOUT THE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE

Dr. Furgurson offers several options for dental implant patients. In many cases, he will be able to surgically place the dental implant in his Chapel Hill dentist office. In other cases, your dentist may work with a local oral surgeon or periodontist to coordinate the surgical phase of treatment. Dr. Furgurson will complete the dental implant procedure by placing the final restoration of either a dental crown, partial or full denture.

If you need a tooth extraction, we will preform that first. Then we will surgically place the dental implant in the jawbone. The implant is a small titanium post that will fuse with the living bone as it heals, forming a solid structure for the replacement tooth.

In some cases, we may be able to immediately replace the dental implant with a dental crown, bridge, or denture. In other instances, we will place a temporary restoration while the implant heals and integrates with the bone.

It typically takes 3 to 6 months for the implant to fully fuse with the jawbone. We will attach the final restoration to the dental implant for a permanent restoration.

Dental implants are an exciting option for patients with missing teeth. They offer key benefits for your overall and long term oral health, including the following:

  • Over 95% success rate among current patients
  • Enables a normal diet without restriction
  • Supports healthy bone structure and reduces bone loss in the jaw
  • Patients can speak clearly and confidently without fear of slippage
Benefits Of Dental Implants

Dentures vs. Bridge vs. Implants

Studies show that dental implants have a 35% higher success rate when compared to traditional fixed bridgework or dentures. All three of these restorations replace missing teeth. However, a dental implant is the only one that replaces the actual root structure of a tooth. This means that the prosthetic tooth (or teeth) is permanently in the mouth, and does not require any support from neighboring teeth or the use of adhesives. For denture patients, dental implants can minimize speech impediments often associated with loose or ill-fitting dentures. Dental implants will also allow you to eat more foods and chew much more efficiently so you can live your life without concern over what foods you can and cannot eat.

Types Of Dental Implants

Single Tooth Implant

When a single tooth is missing, a dental implant is often the best choice for restoring your smile with the most natural function and aesthetics, without having to compromise other existing teeth. A dental implant replaces the root structure as well as the lost tooth, helping maintain the integrity and the shape of your jaw through reduced bone loss.

Multiple Dental Implants

If you are missing several consecutive teeth, an implant-secured dental bridge or partial denture can offer stable, comfortable results. This type of dental prosthetic will also provide the oral health benefits that a single implant can provide. An implant-secured dental bridge gives you back a smile that feels natural, allows for normal speech and a healthy diet, and does not require the use of adhesives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Dental Implants Stop Bone Loss?

Yes, dental implants are the only tooth replacement solution that will halt bone loss in the jaw. The implant posts will act as the missing teeth roots in addition to supporting a new dental restoration. This will provide enough stimulation to prevent bone resorption.

Are Dental Implants Right For Me?

To qualify for dental implants, you must have a healthy amount of available bone to support them. Your gums must also be free of gum disease and otherwise be in good health. Age is typically not a factor. Most dentists will not recommend dental implants to anyone under the age of 18 because their jaw may still be developing. For jawbone that needs help, we can recommend a bone graft so that you can get dental implants.

How Many Dental Implants Will I Need?

The amount of dental implants you will need depends on where your missing teeth are located along the jaw. If you are only missing a single tooth, we will place one single implant to support a dental crown. For many missing teeth or edentulous patients, we can use anywhere from two to eight dental implants to support a bridge or denture.
