The first step in the Invisalign process is a consultation with Dr. James Furgurson in our Chapel Hill, NC dental office. He will examine the teeth and gums and review your budget, goals, and oral health. Once he’s determined Invisalign is right for you, Dr. Furgurson will create a customized treatment plan. We will take an impression of your teeth and send them to the Invisalign laboratory to have a series of custom, clear aligners made for your teeth. You will receive your custom sets of clear aligners that are changed out about every two weeks to gradually reposition the teeth. The length of treatment depends on your condition as well as your goals. Generally speaking, treatment takes 6 to 9 months, but some patients may achieve the results they want in as few as 3 or 4 months, while some may need a year or more. A retainer and follow-up visits with Dr. Furgurson will help ensure you maintain your straighter smile for years to come.
Your Invisalign clear aligners should be worn for about 20 to 22 hours per day. We will review how to use your aligners daily as well as care for them before you return home.
Yes, Invisalign does not come with any dietary restrictions. You can remove the clear aligners to eat, but remember to brush and floss your teeth before you wear the aligners again.
Invisalign treatment is no more painful than treatment with traditional metal braces. Although you may feel some mild discomfort as you get used to each new aligner, this will fade as your teeth adjust.
Patients with Invisalign aligners should be very careful to keep them clean. We recommend removing them to eat and drink, and brushing your teeth and your aligners before putting them back into your mouth. Aligners can harvest bacteria that may cause cavities so it is very important to keep your aligner as clean as possible.
While undergoing treatment with Invisalign, it’s a good idea to consume liquids using a straw. Drinking through a straw will help keep the liquid away from your teeth and away from the aligners. This prevents staining.
If you’re going out for a special occasion, you don’t have to wear your Invisalign aligners the entire night. Invisalign recommends that you wear your aligners 22 hours per day, but one night out will not push your treatment timeline back drastically.
