Botox for Jaw Pain in Chapel Hill, NC

Dr. Furgurson may recommend using Botox or Xeomin to reduce muscle tension in the jaw. Jaw pain is a common symptom of TMJ disorders and discomfort. Like fine lines and wrinkles, the neurotoxin in these products prevents muscle contractions.

When Dr. Furgurson places Botox and Xeomin injections, he targets specific facial muscles. After he places these injections, the muscles relax. The result is less pain and the renewed ability for the jaw to sit in a natural position. We recommend injectables in addition to other TMJ treatments. Injectables will not last forever, but they can reduce recurring pain.

Botox and Xeomin FAQs

Learn more about Botox and Xeomin treatment in Chapel Hill, NC, with answers to commonly asked patient questions:

Are Botox and Xeomin safe?

Yes, Botox and Xeomin are safe for patients over eighteen. Botox and Xeomin are FDA-approved. FDA-approved products are found to be safe and effective for their intended purpose. Botox and Xeomin can treat moderate to severe frown lines or facial pain.

As with other cosmetic injections, allergic reactions are possible. You may also feel soreness or experience itching at the injection sites. We will not recommend Botox or Xeomin if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have nerve disorders. Our office will review your allergies to ensure that Botox or Xeomin is best for you.

How long does Botox or Xeomin last?

Botox and Xeomin injections typically last around four to six months. This makes it easy to receive additional treatment when you visit us for routine dental care, which we also suggest every six months.

Am I a candidate for using Botox to treat jaw pain?

Dr. Furgurson always discusses your dental and overall health, including medical history. He will take the time to thoroughly evaluate your jaw joints before recommending treatment for TMJ symptoms with Botox injections.

Does insurance cover Botox when used for TMJ?

Dental insurance will not cover the cost of Botox when treating TMJ. Our front desk will provide cost details for your consideration.

What should you not do after taking Xeomin?

For the first 24 hours after treatment, we recommend avoiding intense exercise, drinking alcohol, or using makeup. You can experience increased swelling, bruising, and irritation at the injection sites. We also recommend waiting at least 24 hours before getting a facial or rubbing your face excessively. Instead, gently wash your face without applying too much pressure to your face. Rubbing or touching your face can move the injectables to different areas of the face.

Can you switch between Botox and Xeomin?

Botox and Xeomin are very similar. However, they do have chemical differences. We do not recommend using these interchangeably or switching between them. Using Botox and Xeomin at the same time can lead to serious complications.

Will Botox lead to a frozen face?

Despite the many misconceptions surrounding Botox, once you receive the injections, you will not get a “frozen face.” Botox will relax the muscles at the injection sites. You will still be capable of making a full range of facial expressions. Our dentists have thorough training to inject Botox for various treatments.

Who is not a good candidate for injectables?

Not everyone is a good candidate for injectables like Botox or Xeomin. We do not recommend injectables during pregnancy or breastfeeding since there isn’t enough research about their safety during this time.

People with muscle or nerve conditions, like ALS or myasthenia gravis, may not be good candidates. Also, if you have an active infection or inflammation in the area where the injectable would be applied, we will wait until it clears.

We will help determine if Botox or Xeomin are right for you before treatment.
